Tamara Visuals is drawn towards compositions, and this informs his approach to photography. Over the past 3-4 years, fully involved one way or another in filmmaking, he has managed to channel and harness his potential as a film director and cinematographer. A running gag with him on set or otherwise is his eyes for framing– bare elements that constitute photography. He takes every opportunity to capture moments in his Lagos waking life and this has brought up a stellar street photography project called Strive.
“Strive” is very Dickensian in its themes. Tamara Visuals’ photography leaves little room for abstraction. There lies a certain rust in the color grading– almost telling us about the story of a people who are near withered, and close to worn. Humanity is a message here, shared experiences too. “Onwa December” is an image of men offloading chickens from the back of a truck. “We all know that in every African Home, the December chicken is always special. Especially on Christmas Day, even if you eat chicken all year, the one on December 25th tastes different.”
He captures rare moments too, like the near aerobic techniques a mallam uses in mixing tea. When asked about the image, “He sells healthy herbal tea. Numerous studies have shown that it boosts the immune system, and fights off inflammation, even wards off cancer and heart disease.” Tamara continues “The manner and ways that the tea is made is why I choose to capture this image.” The photographer continues to expand capacity, build brand, self and capture worthy moments that tell a world of stories.
