Vincentia Anthony, a talented artist hailing from Ghana, brings a unique and vibrant perspective to the world of art. Conversations around art as a commercially viable endeavour has been a running conversation on TheBlotted, and among creative communities everywhere in the world. In this sit-down with her, Vincentia shared insights into her artistic journey, her family background, and the projects that have shaped her career.
Vincentia’s exposure to art began in childhood, as she immersed herself in drawing cartoon characters and creating unique pieces from materials she found laying around. She would draw on them and then display it on her father’s sideboard. While she was born into a family that encouraged her to follow her dreams, she is actually the only one amongst them that ventured into the arts. Others preferred sciences, commerce and paths that would guarantee immediate gratification.
Vincentia began to create when she got into the university and wanted to have paintings in her bedroom. She made two paintings but didn’t even have to hand them up, she found clients and sold them, and from then, she realized that this could be a viable means of income. She began to explore this path, making abstract art her specialty. The inspiration from these works came from everywhere– daily life, personal feelings and random encounters from other artists.
While in the University, Vincentia sold gym wear to support and bring in money, but her first big break from art came in 2021 when she met a Real estate professional. He commissioned her to create 13 pieces, she poured her heart into every piece, carefully considering the client’s preferences. The client liked it and that began a working relationship that ensured Vincentia lived off of her art.
Addressing the often-perceived inaccessibility of abstract art, Vincentia Anthony described her approach to it as a form of expression that allows her to communicate ideas and feelings in a non-representational manner. Abstract art, in her view, was just another language to communicate with the world. Even though the client might not quite understand thoroughly the amount of effort that goes into these works, or the layers of emotions contained within.
While she has done many commissioned projects, the artiste hasn’t put together personal bodies of work yet. There was a time she planned to do this when she was in Ghana, but plans shifted and Vincentia had to relocate to the UK to expand personal growth and opportunities. Although physically distant, her connection to her roots remains evident in the inspiration drawn from nature and imagination, vividly expressed in her artwork.
Vincentia Anthony’s art is non-political in nature but this might change over time. For now, she prefers to focuse on creative expression, aesthetics and personal catharsis. And with these works, she aims to achieve proper communication, aesthetic exploration, personal growth & development; which will eventually culminate to recognition, and success. Vincentia sees the current landscape of art as an exciting opportunity for financial freedom through digital platforms and diverse revenue streams, encouraging artists to carve their path to success while pursuing their passions.
Looking ahead, Vincentia plans to experiment with different mediums for her next exhibition, aiming to engage her audience in new and innovative ways. Consistently evoking emotions through the stroke of a brush. Her driving force as an artist remains self expressing and exploring new ideas while pushing the boundaries of her artistry. Her odyssey is one of resilience, creativity, and discovery— a journey that shows one of the numerous paths an artist can take.
